In the newsletter of May, I wanted to tell you about a zine I really like: ZOMBIE GIRLS 2.0 by Lucie Lučanská, which I bought a few years ago at Colorama in Berlin.
It's a visual study of the phenomenon of foreboding, the feeling that something terrible is about to happen. The illustrator revisits some zombie movies, focusing exclusively on the transformation of the female characters into zombies or demons. And visually I think it's absolutely brilliant. The first part of the zine introduces us to the characters, one by one, just before their transformation, and the second part of the zine shows us these characters who have become monsters. The drawings, with their blurred outlines, are already making us feel a little uncomfortable. With no text, we try to guess the lives of these characters, what they did, who they were, all the while knowing that things won't end well for them. There's a hint of worry in some of their looks, perhaps they already know they're about to be transformed into evil creatures. As we reach the middle of the zine, we switch to the second part, where the girl in the innocent little jumper has protruding claws on the next page, fangs instead of teeth and a neck infested with fungus. Each character is transformed, the colours darker, the portraits more frightening.
The form of the zine is also brilliant, designed like a file you might find in Scully's hands in the middle of an episode of X-Files. The A3 pages are folded in half, two holes are punched in the middle, as if the pages were to be filed away in a folder. The zine is then held together with an elastic and a paper clip - all elements that recall office spaces, archives, files.
The states of transformation are fascinating, as much in Lucie Lučanská's zine as in general, and especially when it involves the body.
At a conference I recently attended on women writers of body horror, it was said that the reason why queer people and women are so interested in this genre, and why they write excellent stories about it, is because they are people who experience the transformation of their bodies on a daily basis, or at least on a regular basis, and who are sensitive to it in both positive and negative ways. Whether it's the menstrual cycle, puberty, childbirth, gender transition... We experience our bodies going from one state to another, more or less quickly, while cis men “don't have a body” (*King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes).
Below are a few examples I found of works and artists who talk about the body, who push the boundaries of conventional aesthetics, who question our ways of perceiving.
Theme of the month
This month I invite you to create a zine in a format you feel comfortable with about transformation. You might want to take a moment to observe what's changing around you or within you. It could be the passage from one emotion to another, from a fresh slice of bread to its advanced state of mould, from the cycle of a flower, from a day of bright sunshine to a thunderstorm.... It's an attempt to capture moments of change, to capture just the before and just the after, in the manner of Lucie Lučanská.

The Last of Us and crochet
I'm taking advantage of having a bit of a cold to watch the series The Last of Us, which fits in perfectly with the theme of the month. Everyone's talking about this series, which I didn't know about until last week and which I think is really good so far. I'm delighted to see non-binary actor Bella Ramsey on screen and Pedro Pascal publicly confronting JK Rowling over her repeated and much-publicised transphobic attacks.
I've also started crocheting with the idea of making myself a little sleeveless cardigan for spring. I'm up to 17 squares out of 44 and I'm so hooked that I can't wait to get to work so I can take my lunch break and keep crocheting!

Dans cette newsletter du mois de mai, je voulais vous parler d’un zine que j’aime beaucoup : ZOMBIE GIRLS 2.0 par Lucie Lučanská que je me suis procurée il y a quelques années de ça, à Colorama à Berlin.
C’est une étude visuelle sur le phénomène de prémonition, ce sentiment que quelque chose de terrible va se passer. L’illustratrice revisite certains films de zombie en se concentrant exclusivement sur la transformation en zombie ou en démon des personnages féminins. Et visuellement je trouve le rendu absolument génial. La première partie du zine on découvre les personnages, un à un, juste avant leur transformation, et la seconde partie du zine on découvre ces personnages devenues des monstres. Les dessins aux contours flous nous plongent déjà dans une sorte d’inconfort. Sans texte, on essaie de deviner la vie de ces personnages, ce qu’elles faisaient, qui elles étaient, tout en sachant que ça va pas bien finir pour elles. On pense lire un semblant d’inquiétude dans certains regards, peut-être qu’elles savent déjà qu’elles sont sur le point de se transformer en créatures maléfiques. En arrivant au milieu du zine, on bascule dans la seconde partie, où celle au petit pull à poids toute innocente, arbore sur la page suivante des griffes saillantes, des crocs à la place des dents, une nuque infestée d’un champignon. Chaque personnage se transforme, les teintes sont plus sombres, les portraits effrayants.
La forme du zine est également génial, conçu comme un dossier qu'on pourrait retrouver dans les mains de Scully en plein épisode d'X-Files. Les pages A3 sont pliées en deux, deux trous sont percés au milieu, comme si les pages devaient être classées dans un classeur. Le zine est ensuite relié par un élastique et un trombone, autant d'éléments qui rappellent les bureaux, les archives, les dossiers.
Les états de transformation sont passionnants, autant dans le zine de Lucie Lučanská que de manière générale, et surtout quand il implique le corps.
Au cours d'une conférence sur les autrices de récits de body horror que j'ai pu suivre récemment, il a été dit que si les femmes et personnes queer s'intéressent autant à ce genre et qu'iels en font d'excellentes histoires, c'est parce qu'iels sont justement des personnes qui font quotidiennement, ou tout du moins régulièrement, des expériences de transformation de leur corps, qu'iels y sont sensibles autant positivement que négativement. Que ce soit le cycle menstruel, la puberté, l'accouchement, la transition de genre... Nous faisons l'expérience de nos corps qui passent d'un état à un autre, plus ou moins rapidement, quand les hommes cis, eux, “n'ont pas de corps” (*King Kong Theory de Virginie Despentes).
Je mets quelques exemples d'œuvres et d’artistes qui parlent du corps, qui poussent les lignes de l'esthétisme conventionnel, qui questionne nos manières de percevoir.
Thématique du mois
Je vous propose de faire un zine au format libre, sur la thématique de la transformation. Ça vous amènera peut-être à prendre un temps d'observation pour voir ce qui se transforme autour de vous ou en vous. Ça peut être le passage d'une émotion à une autre, de la tranche de pain fraîche à son état de moisissure avancée, du cycle d'une fleur, d'un jour de grand soleil à l'orage.... C'est une tentative de capter les instants de changements, de capter juste l'avant et juste l'après, à la manière de Lucie Lučanská.

J'en profite d'avoir un petit rhume pour regarder la série The Last of Us qui colle parfaitement à la thématique du mois. Tout le monde parle de cette série que je ne connaissais pas avant la semaine dernière et que je trouve géniale jusqu'à présent. Ravie de voir l'acteurice non-binaire Bella Ramsey à l'écran et Pedro Pascal affronter publiquement JK Rowling pour ses attaques transphobes répétées et très médiatisées.
J'ai aussi commencé le crochet dans l'idée de me faire un petit gilet sans manche pour le printemps. J'en suis à 17 carrés sur 44 et je suis tellement accro que je trépigne d'impatience au boulot pour être en pause déj' et continuer de crocheter !
